is a part of you sad about leaving SF? what do you feel are the things you're gonna miss most about it? is the high cost of living the sole reason for the move? also, why not just move to L.A. instead?

Why not move to LA?

Because my pups and I unanimously dislike the idea of living in LA for these reasons:

  • Air pollution
  • Its hot
  • A lot of people seem very fake
  • You have to own a car
  • There are more jobs in our respective industries in other cities

Things I will miss about San Francisco:

  • Its been my home for 10-years, so I’ll miss having that local’s knowledge that comes with living somewhere for a decade.
    • What the best farmer’s market is (Castro)
    • How to get across town in 20min during rush hour (I’ll take it to my grave)
    • Where to go on a good hike
    • Oh, and you don’t need to own a car to get places
  • The massive leather community and all that it offers
  • Unique, gay-centric, dance parties
    • Flagging in the Park
    • Real Bad
    • Play (tank and beef’s first circuit party)
    • HERO (my all-time favourite tea dance, which is long since dead, sadly)
    • Sanctuary
    • Being able to do Hero and then close the night with Sanctuary.  Ahh, I loved that.
  • Food
    • Super Duper Burger
    • Espetus
    • City View Dim Sum
    • That Indian place by West Portal Station
    • That Italian place at the entrance to North Beach
  • Places
    • North Baker Beach (nude)
    • AIDS Memorial Grove
    • That rooftop public parklet downtown where I regularly had public sex with my pups during my lunch break
    • Kabuki bath house

I’m really hoping we discover some fun parties up in Seattle.  Its something I’ll miss the most about SF, even if the party scene was dying.

Could you please back up your claim that "a lot of people seem very fake" from Los Angeles with specific examples? Thank you.

The “Fake Los Angeles People” phenomenon is going to make a lot of people unhappy.  I highly recommend googling “Fake Los Angeles People” and reading the many explanations as to why this happens. It’s important to recognize that this is a common stereotype, but not a rule.

And once you do that, here’s my take:

Why are people from LA perceived as fake?

Some folks blame the entertainment industry, others say its the plastic surgery culture, or that everyone is too superficial to develop meaningful relationships.

I have a different theory.

In a 2008, peer-reviewed study published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, Seattle was ranked the least extroverted city in America.

What are the social implications of a city of introverts like Seattle?

Newcomers to the area have described Seattleites as being standoffish, cold, distant, and not trusting.  Its so prevalent, this phenomenon is called the “Seattle Freeze.”

Of course, these people aren’t actually giving you the cold shoulder.  They’re just introverts, and they made the rules of socializing in Seattle.  If you want to make friends with an introvert, it requires patience.

In that same study, Los Angeles was ranked the most extroverted city in America.

Dare we ask…What are the social implications of a city of extroverts like Los Angeles?

One extrovert is great. I can handle that. But an entire city?!  I hate referencing this clickbait, but BuzzFeed really nails it.

Everyone in LA is so darn sociable and friendly, but it doesn’t seem genuine when you’re a complete stranger.  I believe this is why people in LA are described as fake.

No, many of them aren’t actually fake. They’re all just deliriously friendly puppy dogs.  But thats not normal for many people, so it comes off as fake.

Hi Dylan and Pups, I have enjoyed reading your adventures, trials and life experiences over the last couple of years. As a native Washingtonian I just wanted to give you a heads up about living in Seattle. You will need a car to get around the area. This includes going to the East side (Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond) as well as to the peninsula and to points north of Seattle. If you would like more info on area events, both Gay and Straight please let me know in your blog.

Yes!  Please send all the tips!

Big pup and I have cars, there’s zipcar near our house, and I think pup Bef wants to get a car when he moves…we’ll see.

Are you and pup dating? You two are always so cute together and your smut is amazing

Weekend trip with @alphabeef to Tassajara: an old Zen buddhist monastery that features some wonderful sulfur hotsprings.

It was gorgeous.  Wildflowers in bloom, everything so lush, sulfur on the warm wind…but this was also the peak of horsefly season. We couldn’t go very far without being swarmed, and bug spray was ineffective.

To New Opportunities and to New Adventures.

After cutting our trip to Tassajara short, this seemed like an appropriate detour. Thank you for a wonderful dinner, pups :)

How to journal? Or, what do I do with noodlesandbeef.com now?

This is me when I was 17-years-old.  Just look at that jawline.  Young, naive me had no idea what his silly journal would turn into.

Back when I started this journal, I had a simple goal:

Gain a better appreciation for my life by writing openly and frequently.

It was based on some wonderful advice I had read in Psychology Today on improving your quality of life.  Journaling forces you to record and examine one’s thoughts and feelings, which can improve your perception of your life.

This has worked pretty well for the first 10-years of my blog when I had, like, ten LiveJournal friends who casually read about my depressing teenage life.

Now I’ve got ~2.2 million readers and everything is terrible.

I really enjoy having a large audience, but I find I cannot write in my journal like I used to.  I have to use coded language to describe uncouth activities, censor myself, or (worst of all) pander to the lowest common denominator by posting sexy photos.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Writing for an audience is difficult because text and photos is an imperfect medium for communicating the nuance of my life.  No matter how eloquent, detailed, or verbose I am, folks can take things out of context.

How bad could it be?

It can’t be helped.  Every year my audience inexplicably grows.  Many of my readers are wonderful, delightful, intelligent people with good taste…and a few are trolls.

That’s just how it goes on the internet.  You know you’ve “made it” when you get hate mail.  Just ask Beyonce.

So, what do I do?

I miss my journal.  I want to be able to write openly again…but, how?  Some ideas:

  • Make a private journal?
    • Pros: I can be as candid as I want because I’m the only person who reads it.
    • Cons: I lose the valuable audience-performer interaction that is so critical to my creative work. (Pretty good paper on this here).

  • Offer paid-access content?
Backstory: I ran an experiment last month selling “I hate Noodles and Beef” shirts to determine the lowest possible price a troll would pay to harass me.  Prices ranged between $1 and $10, and any purchased shirt would result in me donating $10 to the AEF.  Turns out trolls are so cowardly, that they can’t be bothered to spend $1 (costing me $25 for the shirt and $10 for AEF donation) to harass me.  A payment gateway of $1 would stop all trolls.
    • Pros: write about whatever I want, donate 100% of proceeds to AEF or LA&M.
    • Cons: While effective in stopping trolls, I would alienate readers that are too frugal to pay for content.

  • Move to Facebook or some other access-controlled blog platform?
    • Pros: I am mostly free to post what I want, still get some audience-performer interaction.
    • Cons: Facebook doesn’t allow adult content, Livejournal is a russian dating scam, I guess I could build my own platform but I’m lazy.

  • Fourth option: you guys tell me.

I’ve been struggling with the big-audience problem for a few years and its only getting worse.  It is time for me to make a change to my blog so I can start enjoying it again.

Any ideas?

Why can't you just ignore things you don't like and blog whatever the hell you want, like a sociopath?

I think critical feedback is important for personal growth, because I don’t know what I don’t know and it makes me a confident idiot. (See: Dunning Kruger effect).

As an artist, I need it to improve my work.
As a leather man, I need it to push my comfort zone.
As a human, I need it to grow.

Selectively ignoring critical feedback or labeling everything I disagree with as “being trolled” is extremely arrogant. What if I’m wrong? I would be hurting myself and the people I love by allowing myself to stagnate.

That’s what a sociopath would do.

At the same time, most of the harsh feedback isn’t constructive, and very hurtful. Nevertheless, I appreciate the dialog it opens for difficult topics like racism, abuse, or what the best Burger in San Francisco is.

I just think ignoring it isn’t the right solution. What I need is a way to filter out the bad actors who lack the mental and emotional capacity to be helpful.

I’ve restarted @brandedbulltank‘s serial photo project to help reignite his creative drive…and today he asked me to be a guest in his photo!

We took two photos.  Mine and his.  I’ll reblog his version soon as it’s up.

After I took the first photo, I realised the image didn’t depict my story, not when I share my life with my wonderful, beautiful Master.

So I invited Master the next day and made it our story. That afternoon we did our civic duty and kept the Castro very, very gay.

~I love you so much Master, thank you for sharing your life with me~

Hnnnggggg

I just saw a video on facebook of The Rock recording a Haka for a Disney movie, and he was sticking his tongue out towards the end. Reminded me of you :p

Yeah. It all makes sense now that I’ve gotten my genetic test results: I’m Polynesian.

It’s bigger than me. I can’t help it. Clearly this tongue sticking out nonsense was passed down by my warrior ancestors. A sign of natural dominance. It’s in my blood.

brandedbulltank:

I do powerlifting training twice a week. One day a week for volume. One day a week for strength. The remaining days I do isolation exercises for arms, legs, chest, shoulders and back.

Powerlifting training focuses on the three fundamental diciplines: Squats, Bench Press and Deadlift. Each of these exercises are wonderful for activating multiple muscle groups and activating stabilizing muscles in ways you can’t achieve using machines.

While I don’t compete any more, I still train using a program that assumes I do. It gets more challenging every week until you do one rep maxes, then go back to much lower weights, starting the cycle once again - slightly heavier than before.

Feel free to check out my program (Weights are in Kilograms)
